Synopsis Of Research:Cultured retinal cells are exposed to oxysterols as a model of retinal degeneration associated specifically with Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome--a metabolic gene defect leading to accumulation of 7-dehydrocholesterol, the precursor of cholesterol--and as a general in vitro model for studying the response of these cells to oxidative stress and also intrinsic mechanisms of cell protection and death.
