Mission:
To integrate the complementary strengths of the four SUNY Medical Universities and SUNY Optometry into a single SUNY Eye Institute (SEI) in order to enhance research and training in clinical and basic visual sciences in New York State.
Goals are to:
- develop pre- and post-doctoral training programs in eye and vision research across the five schools;
- recruit basic and clinical investigators into eye and vision research;
- promote and foster collaborative research interactions among vision scientists across the schools; and
- establish state-of-the-art eye research core facilities at each of the campuses to serve and augment the capabilities of all five schools.

Dr. Michael E. Zuber was awarded a competitive renewal of his R01 grant from the National Eye Institute. The grant is entitled: Retinal Stem Cell Culture and Characterization. Dr. Zuber's primary appointment is in Ophthalmology at Upstate Medical University.

Dr. Steven J. Fliesler was awarded his largest R01 grant to date (ca. $2 million) from the National Eye Institute. The grant is entitled: Isoprenoid Metabolism in the Retina. Dr. Fliesler is the Meyer H. Riwchun Endowed Chair Professor, Vice-Chairman and Director of Research Department of Ophthalmology and Ira G. Ross Eye Institute Vision Research Center Professor, Department of Biochemistry University at Buffalo/State University of New York.
