Dr. William J. Brunken was awarded a competitive renewal of his R01 grant from the National Eye Institute. The grant is entitled: Role of Extracellular Matrix in Retinal Development and Disease.  Dr. Brunken's primary appointment is in Ophthalmology at Upstate Medical University. 



To integrate the complementary strengths of the four SUNY Medical Universities and SUNY Optometry into a single SUNY Eye Institute (SEI) in order to enhance research and training in clinical and basic visual sciences in New York State.

Goals are to: 

  • develop pre- and post-doctoral training programs in eye and vision research across the five schools;
  • recruit basic and clinical investigators into eye and vision research;
  • promote and foster collaborative research interactions among vision scientists across the schools; and
  • establish state-of-the-art eye research core facilities at each of the campuses to serve and augment the capabilities of all five schools.

The theme of the 2015 Annual Meeting is "Powerful Connections: Vision Research and Online Networking." The meeting will be held in Denver, CO this year.
